Arena history and Grafton Minor Hockey
Hockey has been alive and well in this community for generations. Before the Haldimand Memorial Arena was constructed, residents of the community would crowd local ponds to play. In 1895 a 80 by 60 foot Drill Shed was converted into the first covered rink by Township Council to support the growing community interest. In 1946 the township decided to build a new community facility in dedication to those who served in World War I and II. Haldimand Memorial Arena was completed in 1950. The arena was a community effort that involved fundraising with local groups, businesses, residents and included a provincial grant.*
