Frequently asked Questions
What to expect?
U9 is a progressive, learn-to-play teaching curriculum, incorporating practice drills, skill sessions, and informal games like shinny/scrimmages and obstacle courses. The program refines skating, puck control, passing, and shooting skills gradually, prioritizing fun and skill development. Since we offer a combined age division, we play "half-ice" programming with transition to full ice January 15 as per Hockey Canada Mandated Guidelines. For more information, see our governing body OMHA's website. Below chart from the OMHA website, current as of 2024.
To enhance skill development, emphasis will be placed on small-area games, station-based practices, and skill-focused drills in training sessions. See the below chart which indicates the focus for skills in the U9 program:
The above chart is from the Hockey Canada website, current as of 2024.
All players play all positions - forward/defence/goaltender. We have no full-time goaltenders at this age group, and all players have a chance to play goal (in full goaltender equipment, provided by the league). Once all players have had an opportunity to try goaltender, any interested players can request a second chance.
As the season progresses to full ice, positional play and rules will be introduced (such as defensive-zone positioning, offside, icing etc).

OMHA provides a great resource for hockey equipment as a starting point.
- Other items we suggest: water bottle
- One home and away jersey, to be returned end of season.
- One pair of socks (usually provided once games begin).
- Goaltender equipment
How often do u9's play and what is the schedule?
U9 will play mostly at home ice (Haldimand Memorial Arena). We practice 1-2 a week for 50 minutes. Games can be 1-2 times a week. Every week is different in terms of practice to game ratio. We offer a minimum of 45 hours of ice time per season (that does not include tournaments and exhibition games).
For Current schedule, go to our schedule webpage
- Expect 2 ice times a week (not shared ice times)
- Anticipate 3 ice times a week during peak season

Do U9's play games or tournaments?
Yes, expect U9 to progressively begin to engage in more game play with neighbouring communities.
There may be opportunities to participate in jamborees or tournaments. Tournaments are competitive events with scorekeeping, while jamborees are often more about participation, skill development, and fostering a positive and friendly atmosphere among players. The coach will reach out to players if a jamboree or tournament is available during the season.

Are there any prerequisites to join U9?
Players do not need to have previous experience or need to “move up” from a previous division (such as U7). New players and all skill levels are welcome!
Can u9 be called up to play with u11 (affiliate)?
Affiliates may be selected if the U11 team is able to accept additional players. Traditionally, returning U9 players may affiliate on the U11 team. This is also only permitted only during the transition season, once the U9 program has transitioned to full-ice (Jan. 15 or later). There is no additional cost for a player to affiliate to the U11 team.
Is body checking allowed?
No, body checking is not permitted in any division.
